Current Population Survey

Access Restricted to Penn State researchers and members of the Association of Population Centers (APC). The files prepared below were obtained from both the Census Bureau and ICPSR. Access to this collection is restricted because ICPSR does not allow third party redistribution beyond Penn State or the APC (permission to redistribute within the APC granted by ICPSR) and we cannot grant access to the data per year/wave.

DESCRIPTION: The Current Population Survey (CPS) is a household sample survey conducted monthly by the Census Bureau to provide estimates of employment, unemployment, and other characteristics of the general labor force, estimates of the population as a whole, and estimates of various subgroups in the population.

The March supplement, Annual Social and Economic (ASEC) Supplement (prior to 2003 called the Annual Demographic Files) contain the core labor force information included in every Current Population Survey as well as data on income and work experience. Detailed demographic data representative of the non-institutionalized, United States civilian population and male members of the Armed Services living in civilian housing, are provided in the Annual Social and Economic (ASEC) Supplement as well.  A total of approximately 200,000 records per year record such characteristics as income, age, race, household structure, education, family relationships, occupation, and employment history.

The January and February supplements contain data on Displaced Workers,  Employee Tenure, Contingent Work, or Tobacco Use depending on the year it was collected.
