Demographic and Health Surveys

This information is only for PRI affiliates

STIPULATIONS FOR USE: Access to DHS archival holdings at PRI restricted to Penn State PRI researchers. Data can now be downloaded directly via the Macro website. You do need to REGISTER to use the data. Once you register, if you want to gain access to data already on the PopNet, you will need to forward the email granting access from Macro International to the Data Archivist . Please also include your user name and download password, and the countries that you have registered to use. You MUST gain access to the data on PopNet through the Data Archivist.

DESCRIPTION: Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) are nationally representative household surveys with large sample sizes of about 5,000 households. DHS surveys provide data for a wide range of monitoring and impact evaluation indicators in the areas of population, health, and nutrition.  The core questionnaire for MEASURE DHS+ emphasizes basic indicators and flexibility. Its compact size allows for the addition of special modules so that questionnaires can be tailored to meet host-country and USAID data needs.  The standard DHS survey consists of a household questionnaire and a women's questionnaire. A nationally representative sample of women ages 15-49 are interviewed.

The women's questionnaire contains information on the following topics:

Background characteristics, Lifetime reproduction, Contraceptive knowledge and use, Maternity and breastfeeding, Immunization of children, Diarrhea, fever, and cough in children, Height and weight of children, Marriage, Fertility preferences, Husband's background, Woman's work status.

Additional modules include:

Consanguinity, Domestic violence, Female genital cutting, Health expenditures, HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Maternal mortality, Pill failure and behavior, Social marketing, Sterilization experience, Verbal autopsy,Women's status.
