Kindergarten Sample (ECLS-K) and Birth Cohort Sample (ECLS-B)
DESCRIPTION FOR ECLS-K: The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-99 (ECLS-K) is an ongoing effort by the U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). The study follows a nationally representative sample of approximately 22,000 children from kindergarten through fifth grade. From a national perspective, little information is available on the knowledge and skills of young children as they enter kindergarten and move through the primary grades. In part, this research is in response to an increased public awareness of the importance of children's early experiences in care and education evidenced by the National Education Goal on school readiness. (Description taken directly from ECLS-K Website).
DESCRIPTION FOR THE ECLS-B: The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study is designed to provide decisionmakers, researchers, child care providers, teachers, and parents with detailed information about children's early life experiences. The birth cohort of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study (ECLS-B) looks at children's health, development, care, and education during the formative years from birth through kindergarten entry. Unique to this study is the inclusion of fathers; fathers are asked directly about their children and their involvement with them (Description taken from ECLS-B Website).
