It is intended to be a comprehensive list of all facilities in the United States which provide medical, nursing, personal care, or custodial care to groups of unrelated persons on an inpatient basis. Included is information concerning type of ownership, services offered, capacity of facility, characteristics of residents or patients, and size and type of staff.

KNOWN PROBLEMS: In the 1982 survey, for hospital-based homes, "type of ownership" codes do not correspond to those specified for the field in the tape documentation. (Hospital-based nursing homes can be identified by an "h" in tape position 6). In both surveys, imputed data were used for all hospital-based nursing homes and for other facilities in instances where data such as total beds, total residents, or type of ownership were not reported by the facility.
