STIPULATIONS FOR USE: Access Restricted to Penn State researchers and members of the Association of Population Centers (APC). The files prepared below were obtained from ICPSR. ICPSR does not allow redistribution to third party users beyond Penn State or the APC (permission to redistribute within the APC granted by ICPSR).
Cumulative DESCRIPTION: The cumulative data file consists of variables derived from the series of biennial SRC/CPS National Election Studies, 1952-1988. The dataset includes a series of demographic variables, and measures for social structure, partisanship, candidate evaluation, public opinion, ideological support for the political system, voting behavior, participation and involvement.
Annual File DESCRIPTION: This study is part of a time-series collection of national surveys fielded continuously since 1952. The election studies are designed to present data on Americans' social backgrounds, enduring political predispositions, social and political values, perceptions and evaluations of groups and candidates, opinions on questions of public policy, and participation in political life. In addition to core items, new content includes questions on values, political knowledge, and attitudes on racial policy, as well as more general attitudes conceptualized as antecedent to these opinions on racial issues. The file also contains vote validation data. Parts 22 and 23 provide Voter Validation Office Administration Interview (or Election Administration) data. In its original, unexpanded version (Part 23), the file contains one record for each interview conducted with Election Administration officials in charge of 166 election offices. This file was expanded so that information from the appropriate election office could be attached to the records of each of the respondents in the post-election survey. The expanded file (Part 22) adds the respondent's post case ID, vote validation ID, and two variables to clarify the distinction between office of registration and the office associated with the respondent's sample address. Part 24, Results of First Contact with Respondent, contains one record per respondent and reports the actual disposition of the first contact made with the selected respondent. These data were coded from the coversheets and call records in order to provide a better coding of refusal conversion than that contained in the ''refusal conversion indicator'' (Variable 8).
