Introduction

As a PRI Affiliate (research associate, research affiliate, postdoctoral trainee, graduate student in the Demography program, or PRI staff member), you may access the complete SAS datasets that drive the SodaPop Web interface. Access is provided through PopNet (UNIX) or Paris (Windows file server).

Accessing Full SAS Datasets on PopNet UNIX

All of the data prepared for SodaPop are available in /home/sas_data on the UNIX network in individual dataset directories.

To access the dataset directory, log in to PopNet (PRI's UNIX network) using the same user ID and password that you use for your @pop.psu.edu e-mail account.

To find the location of the full SAS file, go to the SodaPop dataset Web page (for example, the ARF SodaPop data collection) and click on the pri affiliates tab. In our example, the ARF SodaPop data collection is available in /home/sas_data/arf. To access the file directly from Unix SAS, the libname statement is: libname arf '/home/sas_data/arf';.

If you are uncomfortable using UNIX or UNIX SAS, you may want to use Paris instead (see below).

Accessing Full SAS Datasets on Paris (Windows File Server)

All of the data prepared for SodaPop is available on the Paris file server in \\paris\sas_data. There are two modes of access:

  1. Access the server in individual sessions:
    • from the Start Menu, select Run and then enter \\paris\sas_data

  2. Mount the server as a network drive:
    • right click on My Computer and select Map Network Drive
    • choose a letter from the Drive: selection box
    • in the Folder: box enter \\paris\sas_data (or, if you are outside Oswald Tower, enter \\paris.pop.psu.edu\sas_data)

To find the location of the full SAS file, go to the SodaPop dataset Web page (for example, the ARF SodaPop data collection) and click on the pri affiliates tab. In our example, the ARF SodaPop data collection is available in \\paris\sas_data\arf. To access the file directly from Windows SAS, the libname statement is: libname arf '\\paris\sas_data\arf';.

Special SAS'd Datasets not in the SodaPop Web Collection

The PRI SodaPop Team is currently working to facilitate access to semi-restricted datasets (for example, DHS and Public Use Add Health) by preparing them as SAS datasets in a Windows environment. Data resides in access-controlled directories on Paris (permissions assigned by individual user account) and you will need to contact the PRI Data Archivist to request access.

Getting Help

With Datasets: You may consult with the PRI Data Archivist regarding questions about dataset content, and the Computer Core Programming Team if there appears to be a problem with the extract file. For information on services available to PRI affiliates, please see both the Data Archive and Computer Core web pages. Please note that you can also find information on the data source on each SodaPop dataset web page under ORIGINATING AGENCY/PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR(S). If the source data has a Web site, it is provided under RELATED WEB SITES.

With Technical Problems: If you are having difficulty with the SodaPop interface (e.g., receiving error messages, system hangs interminably when a link is activated, broken links) please contact the SodaPop team.

It is helpful if you can provide us with the text of any error messages you receive. If the system seems to be hanging when you are making an extraction, please be aware that extracting large subsets of variables may take some time.

Making Suggestions

We hope that SodaPop is a helpful resource for your research. We welcome user feedback about the site—what you like, what you don't like, new data that could be added, etc. To submit your suggestion, contact the SodaPop team.
