SodaPop for Users Outside of Penn State

Getting a SodaPop Access Account:

Variable searching and documentation access do not require an account. To create and download a data extract file from the SodaPop collection, users external to Penn State must apply for an account. Please read through the "Account Caveats" below prior to filling out the SodaPop account request form.

Account Caveats:

Please take note of the conditions of use listed at the top of the SodaPop account request form. By requesting access to the data, you are agreeing to abide by those conditions.

  1. Selecting Datasets: When you select the data collection you would like to access, please note that only one dataset can be indicated per account request form. If you wish to access multiple collections, you may do so by filling out a separate form for each. We can assign the same user ID and password for each collection.
  2. Access Restrictions: Please note that some of the datasets in the SodaPop collection are restricted to specific user populations, as described on the SodaPop Data Collections Page. "Data available to PSU only" indicates that the data is only available to Penn State users; "Data available to PSU and APC members" indicates that data is also available for use by researchers affiliated with a member institution in the Association of Population Centers (APC). These stipulations for use have been set forth by either the originating agency/principal investigator(s) or the distributor and cannot be negotiated.
  3. Purpose of Research: Please provide a succinct explanation of how you plan to use the data (typically your research question). We ask this question to verify that the data will be used for valid research purposes only.  Valid research purposes include: publications (for journals, books, conference papers), presentations, class assignments/teaching, theses, dissertations, and for exploratory analyses (often conducted prior to formalizing a grant application).  If your response to this question is "for research," we will contact you to request additional information.  Users must supply a valid academic, government, medical, scientific, or other formal research institution as their affiliation.  Please use a valid email address (preferably an institutionally provided email such as xyz@psu.edu) when requesting an account.
  4. Active Period of Account: Accounts for SodaPop typically expire after one month unless otherwise specified on the request form (Dates of Proposed Use). The maximum period for an active account is six months. If your account should expire before you have completed your research, you may contact the SodaPop team to renew your account.

Now that you're read the caveats, you're ready to fill out the account request form. Please fill in all required fields. We will contact you by e-mail, so be sure to provide a valid e-mail address. We collect minimal demographic information for our internal usage statistics (which are used to demonstrate the value of our effort in maintaining SodaPop), but no identifying information is ever released.
