Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

Notice

The Population Research Institute (PRI) is currently evaluating the SODAPOP service. The ability to extract a data set containing a subset of variables will not be supported after September 15, 2016.

The data collections in SODAPOP will still be available from the PRI. If you should have concerns about this change to the SODAPOP service or need to access some of the data, contact the PRI's Computational and Spatial Analysis (CSA) core at csa-info@psu.edu.

DESCRIPTION:  The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as the Food Stamp Program) provides time-series data on State and county-level estimates of SNAP participation and benefit levels, combined with area estimates of total population, the number of persons in poverty, and selected socio-demographic characteristics of the population. All data, except program benefit amounts, are for a selected point in time each year; program benefit levels are total benefits issued over the course of a calendar year.

Time-series data are available for program participation counts since 1997 (and for 1989, 1993, and 1995). Estimates of program benefits are available since 1969; some county-level benefits data are imputed. Estimates of population counts and persons in poverty are available for selected years.
